Burt Palmer, Senior Pastor

Burt Palmer, Senior PastorBurt, a native Texan and third generation United Methodist minister, claims Wichita Falls as his hometown. After graduating from Wichita Falls High School, Burt went on to earn degrees from Hendrix College and Duke University Divinity School. In 2000, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Perkins School of Theology at SMU. He is married to Shawn and they have two children, Micah and Meagan. He enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.

Bobbie Maltas, Associate Pastor

Bobbie has been appointed to serve Bear Creek United Methodist Church since June, 2000 when she graduated from Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas. She served previously at St. John The Apostle UMC in Arlington, Texas and Cypress UMC in Houston. Although there are many things she loves about Bear Creek UMC, one of the ministries closest to her heart is Faith Matters, the contemporary worship service. Her greatest joy is spending time with her daughter.

Gaylynn Brewer, Early Childhood Ministries CoordinatorGaylynn has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church for over 20 years and has been working at Bear Creek UMC for almost 15 years.

Faye Brown, Wedding Coordinator

Faye Brown, Wedding CoordinatorFaye has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church since 1985 and on the staff since July, 1988. She has the responsibility for all the weddings performed at the Church. She is married to Bucky Brown and between the two of them, they have 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She loves her position and the wonderful opportunity she has to be of service to the wedding party as a representative of our church.



Charla Burleson, Administrative Assistant

Charla Burleson, Administrative AssistantCharla has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church for almost 30 years and has served on the Church Staff for more than 16 years. She and Larry, her husband of 36 years, raised their 3 children in the children’s and youth ministries here at Bear Creek UMC. She enjoys the many connections she has made throughout the years and the sense of family that BCUMC offers. As Administrative Assistant, she has come to know several different pastors and their families and continues to stay in touch with them. Change is the only constant in Life and to this she simply says, “This is the day the Lord hath made, I will rejoice and be glad in it!” Psalm 118:24

Mary Fitzgerald, Business Manager

Mary Fitzgerald, Business ManagerMary  and her sons Joey and Allen Hunter began attending BCUMC in 1984 and joined the church in 1987. She met her husband Mark Fitzgerald at a UMC singles retreat at Lakeview in 1987. They were married in 1989. After a 20 year career in banking, Mary joined BCUMC in 1999 as the Financial Secretary. Shortly after joining the staff a BCUMC God brought their daughter April into the Fitzgerald fold. Mary eventually moved into the position of Business Manager. She is an active member of the National Association of Church Business Administrators.

Barbara Goddard, Receptionist

Barbara Goddard, ReceptionistBarbara has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church since 1987. She joined the staff as a part-time receptionist in August 2005. Barbara moved to Houston in 1982 from Colorado when she married Darell. They love this church and their Sunday school class, Betwixt and Between. Barbara has four children and two cats.

David Gray, Youth

Dave Gray, Youth DirectorDave and his wife, Bernadette, have served in full-time student ministry for over 10 years before coming to Bear Creek United Methodist Church. They have 3 boys.

His love and passion is reaching youth; meeting them where they are in their spiritual journey and helping them move forward with Christ. One of the goals of the Student program is to train up leadership through discipleship and mentoring. Student Ministry is not just for the students but for the whole family.

Dave loves to kayak, play softball, snow ski, eat great food with friends, work on vehicles and hang out with his family.

Kymn Harrison, Director of Ministries for Families with Children

Kymn Chapman, Director of Ministries for Families with ChildrenKymn loves the Lord with all her heart. Her passion is to connect kids and families with Christ. Kymn is a recent graduate of the University of Houston- Downtown. She is the author of two books: Prayer Bubbles, and Amazing Abundance. Kymn’s most important accomplishment is being the mother of a most wonderful and amazing teenager named Katie.

Karen Hill, Program and Administrative Assistant

Karen Hill, Program and Administrative AssistantKaren has been employed at Bear Creek United Methodist Church since January 2004. She joined the church in 1998 with her husband Howard and son Peyton. She has been married for 25 years and their son is attending University of Houston. She is a member of Genesis Sunday School Class. She also has a two step-children, Katie and Myers, with four grandsons and one granddaughter, she cherishes time with them all. She really enjoys her work with all the programs and all of her involvement with Bear Creek UMC.

Lauren Koenig, Director of Communications

Lauren Koenig, Director of CommunicationsLauren has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church since her confirmation, almost 20 years ago. She returned to Bear Creek UMC after college at Southwestern University, graduate school at the University of South Carolina, and marrying Rick here at Bear Creek UMC. She came to work at Bear Creek UMC in November 2004. Lauren and Rick have two daughters, Clara and Elise.

Juliana Mazurkewicz, Assistant Director of Family Life

Juliana Farris, Assistant Director of Family LifeJuliana has been a member of Bear Creek United Methodist Church since 1996. She was married in October of 2007 here at Bear Creek. She is the mother of a lovely daughter named Lily, and has another on the way!

As assistant to Chris Smith, Juliana is involved in all sorts of fun activities involving families at the church, such as Camp BC and Upward Basketball.

Her favorite bible verse is Romans 12:1-2 from The Message: “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life–your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life–and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out".

Janet Scarcella, Organist and Music Associate

Janet's career in music ministry and music education spans over 40 years. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music from Sam Houston State University, where she met her husband, John. She retired in 2001 from a 22-year tenure as music teacher and arts administrator at St. John’s School. Janet enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading and traveling.

John Scarcella, Director of Music

John has served for over 40 years in church music ministry. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music and Education from Sam Houston State University. He retired in 1997 from a 30-year career as a choral director and music administrator for Cy-Fair ISD. John and his wife Janet have two children, Jason and Jennifer, and four grandchildren. He enjoys barbecuing, welding, hunting and fishing.

James Sharp, Public Relations Coordinator

James and his wife Jill have been married for 14 years and have two adorable children, Jaxon and Jaden. He and his family recently returned to Bear Creek UMC after living in East Texas and Calgary, Canada and he joined the staff in January 2008. James is a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class at BCUMC. He enjoys spending time with his family, digital photography and working on his Camaro.

Chris Smith, Director of Family Life Ministries

Chris Smith, Director of Family Life MinistriesChris has been a member at Bear Creek United Methodist Church since moving to Houston with her husband and daughter in 1993. She has been on staff since 2002 when the Family Life Center opened and she became the FLC Director. Chris and Pat have been married for 30 exciting years and their greatest accomplishment together has been raising Laura and watching her grow into the beautiful woman she is today. Her interests in which Pat shares with her include mission and outreach projects, woodworking and fishing.

Kristen Vickers, Receptionist

Kristen Vickers, ReceptionistKristen has been attending Bear Creek UMC since 1979 when she was two years old, and has been a member since her confirmation when she was in the 6th grade. She has grown up here! After traveling the world as a performer on a cruise ship, she returned and soon met her husband Aaron, right here at Bear Creek. She has a step-daughter, Alyssa, who lives in Florida, and two puppies, Buttercup and Wiegel. Kristen’s passion is dance and she occasionally shares that gift with the congregation through liturgical dance. She is extremely happy to be working here at BCUMC and feels that her job is just one more blessing from God that she gets to share!

Frank Votaw, Facilities Services Director

Frank Votaw, Facilities Services DirectorFrank grew up in St. Louis, MO and upon graduation from the University of Missouri moved to Houston in 1972. He and his wife of thirty years, Andrea, have two children, Ryan and Emily, and they have lived in the Bear Creek area since 1977. Prior to joining the BCUMC staff in February 2001, he worked for over twenty years in the structural design of chemical plants and fossil/nuclear fueled power plants. He is an avid soccer fan. Frank loves being a member of the BCUMC family!
