Wow, this could be a long list! Are you a good listener? Do you just like to visit? Shelter residents have been through quite an ordeal and sometimes just need someone to talk to or to listen. Play cards or board games; maybe share a cup of coffee with them. Do you like children? Giving and hour or two to play with residents' children does a lot to relieve their stress. How about taking some laundry to the laundry mat? Glamorous no, Christ-like yes!
Own a mini-van, SUV or pickup? Transportation to and from FEMA or other social service agencies is always needed. Not everyone comes with their own transportation. Pickup trucks and their owners can be helpful by hauling food, water or other supplies for the shelter. Individuals who would be willing to do laundry for the shelter residents is another volunteer opportunity. Can you navigate the Web? You could oversee or assist in the computer lab. How are your organizational skills? Someone has to organize the personal hygiene items, cleaning and cooking supplies, clothes and other items that are donated to the shelter. Do you look great in rubber gloves? There are lots of pot and pans that need to be washed after every meal. And then there’s paperwork, lots of it. Office skills and general knowledge of the alphabet will land you in the Registration or Staffing areas.
Just come as you are with the talents God has given you or the conviction he has placed in your heart and there will be a place where you can make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering at the shelter. We’re waiting to hear from you.
